More than 30 years have passed since the last publication of the Russian-Swahili Dictionary in 1963. That's why there was an obvious necessity to compile a new dictionary which would reflect the development of both languages .

This Russian-Swahili dictionary is the attempt to create such a modern dictionary that will make easy the translation and teaching of Russian and Swahili. The dictionary was compiled with the help of modern computer technologies, thus enabling the user to enjoy a great variety of synonyms. The dictionary contains about 20 000 vocabulary items from different fields of knowledge, such as economy, finance, politics, medicine, science and technology. Moreover, there is a supplementary list of geographical names.

The author is grateful to his parents: V.M. Polikanov and E.A. Polikanova - for their help during his work at the dictionary and expresses his cordial gratitude to his teachers: N.T. Petrenko and the late N.V. Potekhina.

All vocabulary items are put in the alphabetic order in accordance with the Russian alphabet. The main word of the vocabulary entry is printed in bold type : собака , работа . All commentaries are written in round brackets in italic type: (тех.) , (мат.) . Homonyms and different meanings of the word are marked with Arabic numerals with commentaries. Synonyms are separated by comma, nuances of definition by semicolon with a commentary if necessary:

1) (луна ) mwezi (mi-); месяц во второй декаде mwezi mchimbu
(mi-) ; молодой месяц mwezi kongo (mi-) , mwezi mchanga (mi-) ,
mwezi mwandamo (mi-) , mwezi mdogo (mi-) , mwezi mpya (mi-)

2) ( часть года ) mwezi (mi-), shahari (-) ( поэт.) ; лунный суахилий -
ский месяц mfunguo (mi-); месяц поста mwezi wa mfungo ( mi-) ,
mwezi wa tumu (mi-)

Swahili translations are given with regard to their common pronunciation. Part of the word or word combination that can be excluded without distortion of the meaning is given in square brackets : mfumba[ji], [ugonjwa wa] kaka. Words that can be replaced for one another are given in parentheses : -fanya (- оnа , -wa na, -patwa na, -shikwa na ) huzuni.

Swahili noun is followed by the plural prefix, the plural form or words ( мн.) and (ед.) , meaning that a noun is used either only in plural or in singular : kitabu (vi-), usingizi ( ед.), maafa ( мн.) . If there is a hyphen in the brackets it means that a singular form prefix is similar to the plural : mbinu (-).

Swahili infinitive is marked with a hyphen : -kutana, -zungumza. That also relates to other parts of speech that agree with Swahili nouns : -kali, -nne.

Our biggest struggle is keeping Kamusi online and keeping it free. We cannot charge money for our services because that would block access to the very people we most want to benefit, the students and speakers of languages around the world that are almost always excluded from information technology. So, we ask, request, beseech, beg you, to please support our work by donating as generously as you can to help build and maintain this unique public resource.

Do you have any connections with a generous person, corporation, foundation, or family office that might wish to make a long term impact on educational outcomes and economic opportunity for speakers of excluded languages around the world?
