Data fields: English Definition
In July 2005 we began including English definitions in the dictionary in order to make the Kamusi Project more useful to Swahili speakers studying English. These English definitions will also prepare the way for future multilingual Internet Living Dictionary features. We invite fluent English speakers to write definitions in clear and succinct English, or to add definitions from public domain sources (generally speaking, dictionaries more than 70 years old).
The English definition field should be a definition of the English term, not a word-for-word translation of the Swahili definition of the Swahili term.
We have obtained copyright permission to incorporate definitions from Webster's Online Dictionary into the Kamusi Project database. You are invited to use the link below to search for English terms in their database and copy-and-paste the appropriate definition into the Edit Engine "English Definition" field. We are grateful to Philip Parker for making his data available to our project. When you copy and paste a definition, please begin the sentence with a lower-case letter (a rather than A) and leave off the final period/ full stop punctuation mark.
Webster's Online Dictionary limits you to 500 lookups per day from any one computer. If you are really inspired to help the Kamusi Project by incorporating hundreds of definitions at a time, please take an overnight break after you reach 500!

Our biggest struggle is keeping Kamusi online and keeping it free. We cannot charge money for our services because that would block access to the very people we most want to benefit, the students and speakers of languages around the world that are almost always excluded from information technology. So, we ask, request, beseech, beg you, to please support our work by donating as generously as you can to help build and maintain this unique public resource.
