Data fields: Alt Word and Alt Plural

Words often have more than one "correct" spelling. For example, "color" is the primary American spelling for the word encompassing red, white, and blue,, and "colour" is the British spelling. Beginning in September 2005 we have added two new fields to the Edit Engine to account for these acceptable alternatives.

Alt Word is the field in which you should type alternative spellings for the word at hand. The primary spelling of the word should go in the Word field, and the alternative spelling or spellings (separated by commas) in the Alt Word field. Do not put "alternatives" that are different words with the same meaning - only use this field to show acceptable spelling variations.

Alt Plural is the field in which to type alternative spellings for the plural forms of nouns. For example, the English word "appendix" has two plurals, appendixes and appendices. The primary plural form should go in the Plural field and the alternative spelling or spellings (separated by commas) should be placed in the Alt Plural field.

Note that it is perfectly acceptable for an entry to have a Swahili Alt Word but not an English Alt Word, or vice versa. Also, you will find many cases where an Alt Plural exists, but not an alternative singular form, such as for "appendix," or vice versa. The Edit Engine allows you to enter Swahili alternates without English correlates, or English alternates without Swahili correlates, or Alt Plurals without items in Alt Word, or Alt Words without items in Alt Plural. However, you cannot enter Alt Plurals for parts of speech that do not have plural forms, such as verbs.

Data entered into the Kamusi lexicon prior to September 2005 showed each alternate spelling as a separate entry. Please help us improve the quality of the Kamusi data by using the Edit Engine to move all alternate spelling information into the Alt Word and Alt Plural fields, and then deleting the duplicate entries that contain the alternate spellings as separate entries.

Our biggest struggle is keeping Kamusi online and keeping it free. We cannot charge money for our services because that would block access to the very people we most want to benefit, the students and speakers of languages around the world that are almost always excluded from information technology. So, we ask, request, beseech, beg you, to please support our work by donating as generously as you can to help build and maintain this unique public resource.
